After a very windy and cold rehearsal day… Elly and Jonathan’s day couldn’t have been more perfect. As always we are very privileged to have the opportunity to play at least a small part in preserving what will arguably be one of the most if not THE most important days in the life of Elly and Jonathan.There are several things to take note of in this segment. What Every Bride should know about Wedding Video - “Choosing Your Videographer”

Welcome to the second entry into a series of articles regarding Wedding Video. In this installment I will talk about what to look for when choosing your wedding videographer.

Today’s wedding videographers are much more than a couple of guys with tripods and video cameras… In fact the standard reference in the industry is that our products are not to be compared to “Uncle George and a video camera from Best Buy!”. In fact, most of the professionals in this industry that I have the pleasure to be associated with are very talented wedding cinematographers.

What does “wedding cinematographers“, really mean? Well, I’m glad you asked that question… because it means that when you hire a wedding videographer professional, you are investing in that person’s passion, experience and tools that allow them to create a compelling, dramatic, emotional and inspiring recollection of your wedding day. One, that depending on the style of editing you choose, can have qualities not unlike those of the commercial film industry.

The desire to produce this level of production has always been there among wedding videographers, but this has become a reality over the last few years as the film industry has embraced digital film making. Did you know for instance that many of the reality tv shows, even indie movies are shot with the same equipment that is common to most professional wedding cinematographers? Well back to the “cinematographer”… what exactly does that mean? It means that this individual takes his/her craft very seriously. It means that they are a student of the art that they are members of professional organizations that promote the best practices of wedding video. It also means that they have a solid command of lighting, creating dimension, depth of field etc… all things that create the “photography” of video. Check the credits of your favorite movie. Did you notice that one the of first credits to come up after the cast was the “Director of Photography”. This is the title given to the person who is responsible for “photographing the movie”. Sounds like crazy talk huh?… well not really.

All the same talents that go into the visual components of professional movies have to be understood, considered and practiced when capturing and telling the story of your wedding day. As you make your choice for wedding videographer… ask and observe these things….

1. Do they seem to be passionate about their work?

2. Do they have a reference list that you can read about or contact?

3. Do they keep up with the latest trends in wedding moviemaking and equipment?

4. Do they have examples of their work that is similar to what you are interested in?

5. Are they interested in telling a story, or simply recording video of your wedding?

6. Are their films engaging, emotional and inspiring?

7. Are they members of the local professional organizations… national trade groups that specialize in best practices and the latest innovations in the craft of wedding film making?

Good luck as you decide and choose your wedding videographer. Remember, these professionals want the opportunity to create for you a lifetime keepsake… one that will allow you to experience everytime you watch it, your wedding day over and over again.
